Vape Recycling Unveiled: Making Informed Choices for a Greener Tomorrow

Vapes, with their rising popularity, have raised a pertinent question: Can vapes be recycled?

The answer is yes, but the journey to recycling them is intricate and requires specific considerations. Simply tossing your old vape into the regular recycling bin at home or work is a no-go; it won't be recycled, and worse, it could pose a fire hazard. The culprit? Vape batteries. No batteries, dead or alive, should ever find their way into household or workplace recycling and garbage bins. The potential risks are high, with instances of vapes exploding in recycling trucks, causing damage and endangering drivers.

So, what do you do with your used vape? The first step is identifying the type of vape you have, as this determines the available recycling and disposal options. Reusable vapes, which allow consumers to recharge the battery and replenish the e-liquid, vary in their recyclability. If your vape is designed for disassembly with removable components, such as the battery, there are disposal and recycling options available for these reusable models.

On the other hand, single-use vapes are intended to be discarded once the e-liquid or 'vape juice' is depleted. Identifying a single-use vape is simple; if it's sealed with no easy access points for disassembly, it falls into this category.

Concerned about the environmental impact? While any kind of vaping is deemed harmful to the environment, considering the growing reliance on vapes for smoking cessation and stress relief, it becomes crucial to make informed choices. If you choose to use a vape, opting for a reusable model with a removable battery is environmentally preferable. Reusing the same vape minimises waste, reduces the need for resource extraction, and curtails water usage and greenhouse gas emissions associated with new vape production.

In essence, as vapes become an integral part of modern lifestyles, understanding the nuances of their end-of-life disposal becomes essential for a sustainable future. Making conscious decisions about recycling and choosing environmentally friendly options can contribute to a greener tomorrow.

Let's delve into the intricacies of recycling reusable vapes, exploring step-by-step procedures to ensure these devices find a second life without harming the planet.

Step 1: Battery Recycling

Reusable vapes comprise a complex mix of components, with the lithium-ion battery being a crucial element. Before embarking on the recycling journey, determine if your vape allows you to remove the battery. If so, the battery can be responsibly dropped off for recycling at designated battery collection points across the country. To ensure safety, cover the battery terminals with sticky tape, preventing sparks that could lead to fires.

Australia boasts a national battery recycling scheme, B-cycle, accepting vape batteries. However, it's imperative not to include the entire vape in the recycling collection bin due to potential toxic materials. By recycling vape batteries through B-cycle, various materials, including precious metals, are recovered to create new batteries and other products.

Step 2: Disposal of Cartridges, Pods, and E-Liquids

While not all components of reusable vapes are recyclable, there are safe disposal options. Vape cartridges, reusable pods, and e-liquids can find a responsible endpoint at your local pharmacy through the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) Project. Although items collected via the RUM Project are not recycled or reused, their safe disposal prevents hazardous materials from leaching into the environment.

However, it's crucial to note that vape batteries should never be placed in RUM collection bins, as they pose a potential fire risk. Some pharmacies may not accept vape components, so calling in advance is advisable.

Step 3: Outer Container Disposal

Once you've recycled the battery and safely disposed of vape components, you may be left with an outer container. It's safe to put this container in your garbage bin. However, without the Australasian Recycling Label, determining whether the vape container can be recycled using current infrastructure is challenging. To err on the side of caution, it's recommended to place it in the garbage bin.

As we navigate the intricate landscape of recycling reusable vapes, it's crucial to make informed choices, ensuring the environment remains a top priority.
